A legal battle has erupted ahead of the release of Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, as Trimurti Films Pvt Ltd has filed a suit in the Bombay High Court against Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, alleging unauthorized use of the iconic 1992 song Saat Samundar Paar. The plaintiff claims the upcoming film has used the tune and lyrics without proper authorization.
Trimurti Films is seeking damages of Rs. 10 crore and a permanent injunction to prevent the use, adaptation, remix, or exploitation of Saat Samundar Paar in Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, scheduled for release on December 25, or in any other film. Given the high-profile parties involved and the film’s imminent release, the case is attracting significant attention. The lawsuit names Dharma Productions and Namah Pictures Pvt Ltd—the film’s producers—as defendants. It also includes music label Saregama India Ltd and rapper-composer Badshah (Aditya Prateek Singh), who is linked to the alleged new version of the song.
Trimurti Films asserts that this usage infringes on its exclusive rights to the original composition. While the defendants have yet to comment officially, the case highlights the growing number of copyright disputes over reimagined classic Hindi songs. In recent years, remixes and reinterpretations have frequently led to legal challenges from original rights holders. Saat Samundar Paar was originally featured in the 1992 film Vishwatma, picturized on Divya Bharti, sung by Sadhana Sargam, and composed by Viju Shah. The song remains a beloved chartbuster and a valuable intellectual property asset.
Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri is a romantic comedy directed by Sameer Vidwans and produced by Dharma Productions and Namah Pictures. Starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, along with Neena Gupta, Jackie Shroff, and Tiku Talsania, the film’s December 25 release is now surrounded by controversy beyond its on-screen romance.
