Plot
Sex education has remained a taboo subject in several parts of our country, however, OMG 2, directed by Amit Rai, aims to spark a debate about its inclusion in school curricula. The film centers on Vivek (Aarush Varma), a young boy whose act of masturbation in school has a devastating impact on his mental health and the way his family is perceived by society. When all hope seems lost, Lord Shiva sends his messenger (Akshay Kumar) to help the family through this difficult time. The messenger encourages Vivek’s father, Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi), to sue the school and other individuals who have spread misinformation about the incident. So, what happens next is interesting to catch.
Review
OMG 2 deserves credit for tackling a topic that most filmmakers would avoid: sex education and masturbation. The film handles these mature themes with sensitivity and humor, and it still manages to leave a message. The story is well-paced, with plenty of laughs and dramatic moments, especially in the courtroom scenes in the second half. The first 20 minutes are a bit slow, as they are used to set up the story, but the film picks up with Akshay Kumar’s introduction and maintains a consistent pace until the end.
The early courtroom sequences are not as gripping as one might expect, and it takes a little while to get into the debate, especially given the weighty subject matter. Some of the family scenes in the first half are also a bit too jokey. However, these shortcomings are ultimately minor in the grand scheme of the film’s message.
Performances
Akshay Kumar is integral to the story, bringing grace and humor to his role as Lord Shiva’s messenger. His screen presence and dialogues are always engaging, and he leaves the audience feeling uplifted by the end.
Pankaj Tripathi steals the show as Kanti Sharan Mudgal. He begins the film understated, but grows into his role in the second half, delivering powerful monologues and one-liners with his signature deadpan delivery.
Yami Gautam is good as prosecutor Kamini, but her character arc could have been developed more fully. Still, she is confident and convincing in her courtroom scenes.
Child actor Aarush Varma and veteran actor Pavan Malhotra are both solid in their supporting roles. Govind Namdev, Arun Govil, and Bijendra Kala also do justice to their respective parts. The rest of the ensemble also performs well.
OMG 2 – The Last Word
OMG 2 is a well-intentioned film with a valuable message. It educates without being preachy, and it is engaging and entertaining despite its taboo subject matter. The courtroom debates could have been more exciting, but the film still succeeds in raising important questions about sex education. OMG 2 is a film that could start some much-needed conversations about sex education. It is commendable for Akshay Kumar to star in a film on this subject, and it is a film that I highly recommend.
