Anurag Kashyap Responds with Sarcasm as Phule Faces Censorship for Caste References Post Dhadak 2

The highly anticipated biographical film Phule, which explores the lives and legacies of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, has reportedly been postponed. This delay comes after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) allegedly demanded the removal or alteration of references to caste within the film, a move that has provoked significant criticism from both creative and activist communities.

Anurag Kashyap’s Strong Reaction

Director Anurag Kashyap, known for his candid opinions, was among the first in the film industry to voice his concerns. He shared an Instagram story highlighting the news of the film’s delay, commenting in Hindi: “Bhai India mein caste to exist hi nahin karti. Dhadak 2 mein bhi yahi bolta tha. Hamare leaders ne India mein caste system khatam kar diya hai. Baaki jinko nahin dikhta, woh chu**** hain.” His statement, laced with sarcasm, critiques the narrative that caste is no longer a significant issue in Indian society—a perspective often reflected in sanitized mainstream cinema and political discourse.

Phule aims to showcase the revolutionary efforts of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, who were pioneers in combatting caste-based oppression and advocates for education and social reform. The CBFC’s reported objections to caste-related content are seen as an attempt to dilute the film’s core message. Initially set to release on April 11, the film is now scheduled for April 25, following objections reportedly raised by the Brahmin community.

Dhadak 2 Facing CBFC Challenges

In related news, Dhadak 2 is also encountering difficulties in securing CBFC certification due to its themes surrounding caste. A source revealed to Bollywood Hungama, “Dhadak 2 deals with caste issues and is supposed to be a shocking tale. The Examining Committee (EC) of the CBFC commended the makers for tackling such a subject. However, they are deliberating on the appropriate rating for the film and which scenes, if any, should be cut due to its content.

As the debate surrounding caste and representation in cinema continues, both films exemplify the challenges creators face in addressing sensitive and significant social issues.
