Emergency: Kangana Ranaut Starrer Encounters Protests by Alleged Khalistani Groups in London

After numerous delays and obstacles, Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ finally premiered in theaters worldwide last week. However, the challenges surrounding the film are far from over. In India, the Punjab government is currently addressing protests from the SGPC community, who have raised concerns over the perceived misrepresentation of Sikhs in the film. The situation has escalated further, as London has now become a focal point for dissent, with alleged Khalistani activists voicing their objections.
Reports emerged on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), showing videos from a screening in a London theater where the film was disrupted by protesters. These individuals entered the auditorium mid-show, chanting slogans such as “Khalistan Zindabad” and demanding that the screening be halted. While the protests did not escalate into violence, many audience members were left shocked by the incident, leading to heated exchanges between attendees and the protesters. Despite the disruption, theater authorities have yet to file any official complaints against the activists involved. Back in Punjab, the SGPC community has sent a letter to the Chief Minister demanding a ban on the film’s release.
Although no formal action has been taken, many theaters in the region are experiencing reduced screenings as owners fear potential repercussions from ongoing protests.Since its inception, ‘Emergency’ has faced significant opposition for its portrayal of the events surrounding Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s declaration of emergency in the 1970s. Initially scheduled for release in September last year, the film encountered issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which finally approved it in January. Featuring an ensemble cast, ‘Emergency’ officially hit theaters on January 17 and continues to navigate the tumultuous waters of public reception.
