In a surprising twist, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has surged ahead of Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr.’s War 2 in advance ticket bookings at the US box office. With just nine days remaining until release, the sixth installment of the Spy Universe has sold tickets worth USD 1.2 million (Hindi + Telugu) in North America, compared to War 2’s USD 205K in advance bookings.
It’s worth noting that the North American market is predominantly driven by Telugu-speaking audiences, yet this Tamil film, Coolie, is leading the race in pre-sales. This trend is consistent across other international markets—including Australia and New Zealand—where Coolie continues to outpace War 2 in advance bookings.
The development has caught many off guard since War 2 is a bigger-budget film and part of an established franchise, while Coolie is seen as the underdog. More screening centers are expected to open for both films in the coming days, but currently, Rajinikanth’s Coolie commands a strong lead overseas.
A particularly surprising aspect is that the Telugu dubbed version of Coolie (USD 200K) is outperforming the Telugu version of War 2 (USD 155K) in the US market. Meanwhile, the Hindi version of War 2 (USD 50K) is lagging far behind other major releases like Pathaan, Dunki, Jawan, Tiger 3, and Animal.
The Telugu version of War 2 is also trailing behind films such as Game Changer in the US. The next nine days will be critical for War 2 as it attempts to build momentum and make a significant impact in international markets. For now, however, Rajinikanth’s Coolie is leading the overseas box office battle by a wide margin.
