Sumit Arora Explains Viral They/Them Scene in The Family Man 3: “Srikant Tiwari Is Not Mocking Dhriti’s Pronouns; He’s a Confused Small-Town Father Trying to Understand”

The Family Man Season 3, one of the most-awaited shows, premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 21 and quickly became a sensation. Bollywood Hungama spoke exclusively with dialogue writer Sumit Arora about the new season and its memorable moments.
Set a few years after Season 2, the Tiwari family dynamics have evolved, with the kids growing up and the world around them changing. Sumit Arora shared that these shifts were reflected in the dialogues. He explained, “Atharv is now a grown-up, no longer a teenager, and Dhriti has become an adult. Their external world is very different, which influences their relationship with their parents. This naturally brought new elements to their conversations and attitudes, which I kept in mind while writing.”
He also touched on JK’s storyline, saying, “JK is dealing with his own struggles—dating and the desire to get married. This affects his bond with Srikant. When JK fears dying single during a crisis, it brings out a mix of humor and vulnerability that reflects their growth.”The standout scene that caught everyone’s attention was Atharv explaining to his father that Dhriti’s pronouns are they/them, not she/her.

The dialogue was handled with sensitivity and humor without offending anyone. Sumit explained, “The idea was from the screenplay by Suman Kumar. I put myself in Srikant Tiwari’s shoes—as someone from a small town—to imagine how he’d react. He’s baffled and trying to make sense of the concept, not mocking it. His line, ‘You said they are worried. Who else are worried?’ shows his confusion.
He never fully understands or accepts it during the scene, which is why he quips, ‘Shukar hai, Hindi bach gayi!’ It’s about bridging the gap between his upbringing in Banaras and his kids growing up in Mumbai.”Regarding the season’s cliffhanger, which left some viewers disappointed, Sumit said, “Raj-DK and Suman made the creative choice to end it this way because the story is too big for one season. As an audience member, I’m also eager to know what happens next, but this sets the stage for continuation.”
