Gaslight Review:
Gaslight is a Hindi-language thriller film starring Sara Ali Khan in the lead role. Directed by Pavan Kirpalani, the film revolves around the story of a young girl Meesha played by Sara Ali Khan, who is an estranged daughter. She returns to her father who is from a royal family after he calls her by writing a letter with a request to return. Once she is back she gets welcome by her stepmother but she fails to find her father. She encounters several spooky twists and turns of events and her father is nowhere. She then smells foul play and the rest you better catch on the OTT platform.

The film has Pavan Kirpalani and Neha Sharma as the writers and has produced a typical film story, which we have often seen in other similar genre movies. The ideas in the film have failed to add any freshness to it, while soon becoming predictable. So, the script is pitted with some stale ideas, which have not qualm in impressing the audience. Now, talking about the performances, Sara who seemed to be a decent actress also failed to do something exceptional rather than trying something old and stale without getting much emotional support from the land, nor is she able to get well on her action line.
Similar is the story of Vikrant Massey who remained underutilized by the director, however, his onscreen translation did something good. The only actress who seemed to have gone well is Chitrangda Singh who remained powerful on the screen. Her aura as a royal family member did make all the difference around. Lastly, the actor Akshay Oberoi seemed stereotypical as he did not have much to deliver.
As far as direction is concerned Pavan is a decent filmmaker and has given films like Ragini MMS and Phobia, and the former did come with some innovation but in Gaslight he has messed up things diluting his own style of work. He failed to add the elements, which he did so well in his earlier movies.
The music and cinematography of the movie are also unremarkable. The songs are forgettable, and the background score fails to add to the tension and drama of the movie. The cinematography is also average, with no standout shots or sequences.
Gaslight the last word
Gaslight is a movie that had the potential to be a thought-provoking thriller but falls short due to its reliance on clichés and stereotypical tropes. Sara Ali Khan’s performance is okay but it fails to have the wow factor in it. She or other star cast were not able to save the movie from being forgettable. If you are a fan of Sara Ali Khan or Hindi cinema, you may enjoy watching Gaslight, but be prepared for a movie that fails to look beyond tired stereotypes.
