Director Raaj Shaandilyaa has clarified that his upcoming film, “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video,” featuring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri, bears no resemblance to the Hollywood movie “Sex Tape.” Best known for the “Dream Girl” franchise starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Shaandilyaa revealed that he hasn’t even seen the 2014 film featuring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz.“Vicky Vidya…” follows a married couple on a frantic quest for a CD containing a video of their wedding night, while “Sex Tape” tells the story of a couple who create a sex tape to rekindle their intimacy, only to discover it has gone missing the next morning.

Shaandilyaa mentioned that he only learned about “Sex Tape” after the trailer for “Vicky Vidya…” was launched, noting that the film is set in the 1990s. “Someone asked me on Twitter if our film is similar to ‘Sex Tape,’ and I responded, ‘There’s no sex in our film.’ I was informed by one of our writers that their video went viral online. In our film, the couple makes a video and loses the CD due to their carelessness,” he explained. He emphasized that the characters and storyline are entirely different. “Our film has nothing to do with ‘Sex Tape.’ I’ve never seen it. My inspiration comes from life and the people around me,” he told PTI.

Shaandilyaa is already planning a sequel to “Vicky Vidya…” set in the early days of the Internet. “The sequel will take place 10-15 years later, once the Internet has arrived. We’ve already written the story and will shoot it after I complete another film,” he added.

The idea for “Vicky Vidya…” originated from co-writer Yusuf Ali Khan, with screenplay development beginning in 2018. Various prior commitments and the pandemic delayed production. The filmmaker initially intended to produce “Vicky Vidya…” before “Dream Girl 2,” which released last year.Shaandilyaa expressed his long-standing desire to work with Rajkummar Rao. “I needed a middle-class boy from a small-town city, and Rajkummar perfectly fit that description in terms of body language and style.
