Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated film, Indian 2, concluded its opening weekend with mixed results. Despite the low pre-release buzz, it was evident that the film would face a disappointing start. Unfortunately, the negativity surrounding the film further exacerbated its situation at the worldwide box office. However, amidst this, there is a silver lining as the movie has emerged as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024, surpassing the collection of Maharaja.Directed by Shankar, the Tamil vigilante film hit theaters on July 12 and received mostly negative reviews from critics.
Even the audience did not fully embrace the content. Although Kamal Haasan’s performance has been praised, it alone cannot salvage a magnum opus that has been in the making for years.In India, Indian 2 opened with a collection of 26 crores. With negative word-of-mouth spreading rapidly, the film experienced a drop on its second day, earning 18.50 crores. Yesterday, there was another dip, resulting in a collection of just 15.50 crores. Interestingly, while the Hindi version remained steady over the weekend, there was a significant decline in both the Tamil and Telugu versions.
As a result of these continuous drops, Indian 2 concluded its opening weekend with a net collection of only 60 crores at the Indian box office. Including taxes, the domestic gross collection rose to 70.80 crores. Even in the overseas market, the performance was not up to par, considering the reputation of Kamal Haasan and Shankar. So far, the film has collected a gross of 41 crores internationally. Combining both the Indian and overseas gross, the worldwide box office total stands at 111.80 crores gross in just three days.
While these numbers are impressive for any moderately budgeted film, they are disappointing for Indian 2, which had the legacy of a blockbuster predecessor, a budget of approximately 250 crores, and the brand of Shankar. However, there is a positive aspect to highlight: Indian 2 has surpassed Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja, grossing 109.01 crores, to become the highest-grossing Kollywood film of 2024.
