Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus, Jodhaa Akbar, celebrates its 17th anniversary this year since its release in 2008. This sweeping historical romance tells the epic tale of the union between Mughal Emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Jodhabai, brought to life by the stellar performances of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Known for their captivating on-screen chemistry, coupled with Gowariker’s grand vision, A.R. Rahman’s iconic music, and Neeta Lulla’s exquisite costumes, the film remains a cinematic masterpiece cherished by audiences worldwide.
Adding to its enduring legacy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) recently showcased Aishwarya Rai’s stunning wedding lehenga from the film in its Color in Motion exhibition, curated by celebrated costume designer Neeta Lulla. Taking this honor even further, the Academy has announced a special screening of Jodhaa Akbar in Los Angeles in March 2025, to celebrate its lasting impact on global audiences.
Reflecting on this milestone, director Ashutosh Gowariker, who coincidentally turns 61 today, shared his heartfelt gratitude: “On this 17th Anniversary of Jodhaa Akbar, I’m filled with immense gratitude for the audiences who have kept it alive in their memory and continue to express their love for it. This journey—from its release to now being honored with a screening at the Academy—is a testament to the artistic efforts of everyone involved. I’m humbled by the appreciation the film continues to receive and thrilled to see it resonate globally. The screening at the Academy is not just a celebration of the film but also of the rich cultural heritage it represents.”
