A Chandigarh court has issued notices to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and other individuals involved in the production of the film Emergency. This action follows a complaint alleging that the film, directed by Ranaut, defames the Sikh community by portraying the former Jathedar of the Akal Takth, a significant religious authority for Sikhs, as a “terrorist.” The complaint was lodged by Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, the president of the NGO Lawyers for Humanity, who contends that the film misrepresents historical events and shows disrespect towards the Sikh community.

In his plea, Bassi pointed out that the depiction of the former Jathedar in the Emergency trailer is factually incorrect. He stated, “The accused have portrayed Sikhs in a negative light without proper historical research, falsely alleging that the sitting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takth Sahib was demanding a separate state. This narrative is entirely untrue and aims to tarnish the reputation of Sikhs and the Akal Takth Jathedars.”Bassi further emphasized that this portrayal “hurts the sentiments of the Sikh community and the complainant.” The petition accuses Ranaut of disseminating misleading information and inciting tensions among different communities.

Legal Action Against Kangana Ranaut
The petitioner has requested that an FIR be filed against Ranaut and two other respondents under various sections of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. These sections pertain to promoting enmity between groups based on religion and spreading false information that may jeopardize India’s sovereignty and unity. The Chandigarh court has mandated that Ranaut and the other respondents submit their responses by December 5, 2024.
